Suleman Imdad founded Steel.vision to close the most expensive gap in heavy industry: the distance between legacy paper documentation and the crews standing in front of live equipment. He leads the company hands-on—from training the computer vision models that read P&ID schematics to architecting the offline inference stack that runs them on Apple Silicon at the edge.

The founding conviction is simple: a technician standing at a valve manifold should never need a Wi-Fi signal, a control-room callback, or a binder of faded as-builts to know—with certainty—what they are looking at.

In 2026 he relocated the company to Edinburgh—incorporated in Scotland as Steel Vision Ltd—and focused it on what building safety-critical AI taught him matters most: independent evaluation of AI systems that cannot be allowed to fail.

Why Steel.vision Exists

Heavy industry runs on institutional knowledge that lives in two fragile places: decades-old schematics and the heads of a retiring workforce. Every turnaround, every LOTO walkdown, and every emergency isolation depends on a human correctly translating a 2D diagram into a 3D plant—often under time pressure, in areas with zero connectivity. Steel.vision was founded to make that translation instant, visual, and verifiable.

Rather than chasing cloud-scale dashboards, the company bet on the opposite architecture: multimodal AI compressed onto ruggedized Apple Silicon, running entirely on-device. The result is a field terminal that decodes P&IDs, traces pipe circuits in AR, and answers questions from thousands of pages of local manuals—air-gapped, with zero data leaving the site.

In 2026, Steel.vision incorporated in Scotland as Steel Vision Ltd (SC901577), headquartered in Edinburgh, and extended the mission from building trustworthy field AI to independently proving whether deployed AI systems deserve trust at all—assurance work now offered through its Edinburgh evaluation practice.

Operating Principles

  • Offline is the default, not the fallback. If a capability needs the cloud, it does not ship.
  • Safety is ground truth. Every AR overlay must be auditable back to the source schematic.
  • Founder-led engineering. The person signing the vision talks to pilots and writes the code.
